Abstract
(Bombyx mori L.)
In the context of climate change, the frequent natural disasters, the power and frequency of the
spread of known and emerging diseases and pests, the proper maintenance of plant genetic
resources is seen as a necessary step in their conservation for future.
There are a number of plant species like mulberry that cannot be conserved through seed or
pollen because of high heterozygosis of parents and vegetative mode of reproduction. Therefore
methods for the maintenance of these plants are radically different from those used for annual
crops. Mulberry is conserved in a whole plant form in a places maintained in situ and ex situ
and because of this it takes a lot of space, resources and labour.
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the status of mulberry germplasm in Bulgaria and the
best suited strategies for safely conservation of mulberries, estimated as one of the most
economically important trees in the world and only one food for the silkworm Bombyx mori L.
