EXTERIOR CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME BULGARIAN CHICKEN BREEDS
Ivelina Pavlova, Hristo Lukanov
The aim of the study was to compare some of the main morphological and morphometric features of four breeds originating from the region of Southwest Bulgaria - Struma chicken (SCh), Rhodope painted chicken (RPCh), Southwest Bulgarian chicken (SWBCh), and Bulgarian longcrower (BL). Almost all studied breeds showed the presence of characteristic plumage mutations - beard, crest, and feathered shanks, with the exception of the Rhodope painted chicken. Strumа chicken breed had the highest live body weight, with average values of 3309.3±351.8 g and 2567.3±372.9 g for roosters and hens, respectively (P<0.001). The weight of Southwest Bulgarian chicken breed is the lowest, 2419.6±419.6 g and 1998.0±222.6 g respectively (P<0.001). The Strumа chicken breed has the highest values in terms of the Massiveness Index, 13.79±1.08 for roosters and 12.24±1.39 for hens respectively (P<0.001). The representatives of the Struma chicken showed the highest values of Compactness Index (181.6±15.3 for roosters and 180.2±14.52 for hens, respectively), and the lowest - for roosters (158.2±13.82) and hens (157.4±10.82) from the Southwest Bulgarian chicken. Regarding the Long-leggedness Index, the mean values between roosters and hens of the four studied breeds were close, ranging from 42.01 (BL) to 46.55 (SCh) for roosters and between 37.65 (RPCh) and 44.67 (SCh) for hens. Despite their close ancestry, long-term multivariate selection applied to each of the four breeds has shown significant exterior differences, both in terms of exterior dimensions and phenotypic characteristics.
