OCCURRENCE OF GIARDIA SP. IN GOAT IN SERBIA

Резюме / Abstract
Giardiasis is a zoonotic protozoan disease caused by the flagellate Giardia spp., which infects the small intestine of various mammals, including humans and domestic animals such as goats. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of Giardia spp. infection in goats in Serbia. Fecal samples were collected from 100 goats from different farms and examined using the flotation method and immunochromatographic rapid test. The results showed that Giardia spp. cysts were detected in 12% of the examined samples. The presence of the parasite was more frequent in young animals compared to adults. These findings suggest that Giardia spp. infection is present in the goat population in Serbia, highlighting the need for preventive measures and further monitoring.
