EVALUATION OF STEVIA (STEVIA REBAUDIANA BERTONI) STEMS IN WEANED PIGS DIETS
Sonya Ivanova, Vasil Pirgozliev
A perennial native shrub, stevia (Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni), originally grown in South America, is used as a natural sweetener, thanks to high levels of sweetening glycosides. However, little is known about the application of leaves and stems of this plant to livestock nutrition, especially in the diets of weaned pigs as a tool for increasing feed intake and overcoming weaned stress, resulting in poor health condition. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of stevia stems on the performance and health of weaned pigs. An experiment with 36 weaned pigs (Danube White breed) in total at average 35 d of age, randomly assigned to 3 experimental dietary treatments (2 pens/diet with 6 piglets per pen) was carried out in the Experimental unit of Agricultural institute - Shumen. The piglets were fed ad libitum the following diets: control - C, experimental S1 – supplemented with 5 g/kg of feed and experimental S2 – supplemented with 10 g/kg of feed stevia stems in duration of 35 days after weaning. The results indicated that the average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG) and feed to gain ratio were not different between treatments (P>0.05). During the experiment, no difference in the rate of mortality was observed. The conclusion made was that the performance of weaned pigs had not been affected negatively by the additive of 5 g or 10 g per kg feed stevia stems. A potential of stevia for increasing the consumption of feed and improving performance and health status of weaned pigs needed more research.
